Dinner Date (original version)

INTRO

I'm sitting contemplating paintings
In a pictureque café
Waiting for a friend of mine
Said she'd dine with me today.

Glass of wine keeps running dry
Still the clock keep swinging round
I hear her car just pulling up
But no, she's nowhere to be found.

CHORUS:
Waiting for my dinner date
Endlessly forgiving her for being late
I can't get used to this hapless wait
The first course arrives to find me swallowing... the bait.

I'm pouring over wanted ads
In a street scene magazine
Trying hard to fill my time
To keep from wondering where she's been.

I spot some old friends of ours
Asking if she's been doing well
Some one-liners and a telling smile
To cover up what just won't sell.

CHORUS:
Stuck waiting for my dinner date
Leaving me with too much time to contemplate
How this adventure seems too sedate
And her gift for making excuses is... innate.

I'm listening for a distant rhythm
New song running through my mind
I'm hearing words I thought I'd never write
About leaving this old scene behind.

The waiter's trying to catch my eye
I think he knows what's going on
I wave him over with the bill in hand
And leave a note to tell her where I've gone.

CHORUS:
Still waiting for my dinner date
Wishing just this once she wouldn't make me wait
This vicious cycle seems to be my fate
I'm ready to go but she won't open up... the gate.

INSTRUMENTAL

FINALE:

When you remember me
Please drop me a line
I may be hard to reach
But I assure you I'm doing fine.

I still keep a place for you
Dinner for one is not the same
I'm sure you've had things to do
So I guess no one's to blame. {No one's to blame}

You...
You have a voice of your own
And if you'd use it
We'd see how much you've grown.

We...
We could have shared... we could have shared so much
And I hate to see you go
I'll try... I'll try to keep in touch.
